Homemade {Italian} Breadcrumbs

Here’s another simple and practical idea for the kitchen.  Don’t throw away your homemade bread slices that are about to go stale.  Simply crumble them up with your fingers and place on a cookie sheet.  Season to taste (I used oregano and basil in mine to give it an Italian flavor).

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Bake the breadcrumb mixture for 15 minutes (or until lightly browned around the edges).









Let the mixture cool for a few minutes.  Using a spatula, break up the breadcrumbs until nice and crumbly.  If you used a food processor, you would be able to accomplish a very fine crumb texture.

Store inside a re-usable butter or cottage cheese container and place inside your freezer.

Now you can have yummy breadcrumbs when you need them without all the preservatives and extra cost compared to purchasing them from the store.  The only extra cost to something you were just going to throw away would be whatever spices you decide to add.
